Thanks to very generous donations, six of OFL's local and regional books of maps have undergone preservation services, including plat books of Monroe County from 1902 and 1924. The pages of each book were treated, encased in a clear envelope for protection, and bound together again. Patrons are now able to use the books frequently without damaging the pages inside.

These maps will be on display at the Scrapbook Preservation Party, and they are always available for use in the library during our open hours. Please come and take a look! OFL is so lucky to be part of a community that supports the preservation of historical materials.

First Guide to Civil War Genealogy and Research by Gerald Post

If any of your family members were living in America 150 years ago, chances are good that at least one of them participated in the Civil War. Post's small but thorough guide has information to help you start your research.

Thanks to everyone who attended OFL's "March: Into Your Past" events! As promised, links and information brought up at "The OFL Connection" program with Bob Coomber are provided below.

SOUNDEX CODE
To clear up the confusion, Soundex is just a code based on the SOUND of a surname, rather than the spelling. Using the Soundex system, Bower (B600 in Soundex code) will be filed with Bauer (also B600). See? It's helpful, not scary! For a more thorough description, examples, and a converter, visit ProGenealogists' Soundex Code page (by Ancestry.com, but FREE). If you want to convert a name yourself, check out the rules on the National Archives' Soundex System page.

FAMILYSEARCH.ORG
FamilySearch.org provides free access to genealogy records and resources. You don't need to sign up or purchase a membership to search this site.
