We Are Seeking Genealogy and Local History Library Assistant
Ogden Farmers' Library is seeking a new part-time library assistant who will focus on Genealogy and Local History. This library assistant will help library users research their family history and/or the history of the local area, maintain the relevant collection, and create and/or recruit programs about these topics, among other related duties. They will also help cover the reference desk and develop other adult programming. Please submit a resume and cover letter to John Cohen at jcohen@ogdenlibrary.com. Job Title: Library Assistant - Genealogy and Local History
Reports To: Library Director
Work Hours: 52 weeks / year, 22 hours / week, days as assigned
General Duties: The library assistant takes primary responsibility for genealogy and local history collections and programs. The library assistant also spends time on the reference desk answering questions and developing / implementing other adult programming.
Specific Job Duties:
1. Responsible for the curation, maintenance, and care of our genealogy and local history collections.
2. Recruits presenters for and/or creates and presents programs on genealogy and local history for interested patrons.
3. Recruits presenters for and/or creates and presents programs of interest to the general adult population.
4. Covers reference desk as arranged with librarians on duty, including 1 Saturday a month and occasional evenings.
5. Answers and assists patrons with reference and research questions.
6. Conducts research for out-of-state queries regarding our collection.
7. Researches and applies for potential grants.
8. Other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
· Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required.
· Outstanding customer service skills.
· Knowledge of the Dewey Decimal System.
· Basic understanding of archival techniques to better maintain the quality and safety of the collection.
· Excellent research skills.
· Familiarity with popular genealogy websites and search engines such as Ancestry.
· An understanding of how to communicate with the public effectively.
· Ability to perform the physical demands of the job.
· Ability to organize, prioritize and complete work assignments independently.
· Willingness to work additional hours as required.
· Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Desirable Qualifications:
· Flexible schedule
· Previous work experience in this area.
Physical Demands:
· Ability to walk, stand, reach, kneel and bend.
· Ability to speak clearly to an entire room.
